MAKING SPACE FOR CREATIVITY

My Work

My Work

I have worked as a freelance graphic designer since graduating with my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design in the United States in 1995. The first few years were graphic design focused until I started my master's in Product and Strategic Design in Helsinki in 1998. My master's thesis, however, was an educational environment. (A product that became an interior space for children.) This is the moment I became a hybrid designer! I love to solve problems through design solutions, whether that is two-dimensional or three-dimensional, an information graphic or a product, a participatory event or a small innovation workshop, or indoor or outdoor spaces. You will see in the following collection of my work that I have a wide range of talents and skills I can bring to any problem.

Think with Things

Think with Things is a method I started to develop in 2007 and finally formalized in 2014. It is a dynamic and innovative approach to problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork that draws inspiration from various fields, including psychology, design thinking, and experiential learning. This unique method centers around the use of found objects as powerful tools for sparking imagination, encouraging abstract thinking, and fostering collaboration. It invites participants to explore, experiment, and communicate using these everyday items, unlocking fresh perspectives and solutions. Think with Things originated from a desire to break free from traditional thinking patterns and embrace the power of play and tactile learning. Developed as a response to the need for more engaging and effective team-building and problem-solving techniques, this method has since proven its value in various settings, from corporate boardrooms to educational institutions, helping individuals and groups tap into their creative potential and find novel ways to address challenges. Turtlewings 2.0

Turtlewings studio started in Brussels, Belgium, in 2007. It started with one goal, to create well-designed spaces that positively impact the lives of its users. We were committed to delivering unique, engaging, and functional designs that reflect our client’s diverse needs and interests.

In 2009 we opened our first physical urban design studio and welcomed families and educators. The two essential ideas we wanted to convey were inclusivity and sustainability. We prioritised using reused materials and environmentally-friendly tools to minimise our impact on the planet. Sustainable design is good for the environment and the health and wellbeing of users inhabiting our spaces.

After three years in our small 60m2 space, we took a giant leap to design a community design space of 650m2, continuing with our original mission and expanding on the ideas of diversity and creativity we cater to clients from all walks of life. We went even further with designs that characterised high user engagement, flexibility, adaptability and diversity.

In 2023, it is exciting to open a studio in the UK and further the focus on user engagement and sustainable and universal design while adding a twist of wonder and wellbeing. At Turtlewings UK, design solutions are geared towards enhancing users’ quality of life, whether it’s through empowering learning and exploration, promoting relaxation and stress reduction, improving productivity and creativity, or fostering a sense of community and connection.
